No MORE press censorship in Myanmar

A great news for Myanmar press and journal publications since the Myanmar government lifted censorship for all local publications from August 20, 2012.

Pre-publication censorship -- applied in the past to everything from newspapers to song lyrics and even fairy tales -- was one of the hallmarks of military rule which ended last year.

Political and religious journals were the last to be allowed to go to press without pre-approval from the censors starting from Monday.

Thailand Tourism vs Myanmar Tourism

How would you like to clarify "Thailand Tourism vs Myanmar Tourism"? Nothing really to compare since Thailand is a well-known tourist destination in the World for decades. But some travel agents started to say Thai tourism is at risk as Myanmar travel boom.

Travel agents yesterday warned the government that Myanmar's rapidly growing tourism sector could put Thailand's position as a major regional gateway at risk.

The comments came as Myanmar's tourism minister U Htay Aung told the Sasin Bangkok Forum yesterday that his country was ramping up its tourism infrastructure to cope with a sharp rise in the number of visitors.

U Htay Aung continued by saying that *Between January and June of this year, the number of foreigners flying in to Yangon and Mandalay airports was 50% higher than the same period in 2011*. Market analysts also believe that Myanmar has strong potential to establish itself as a prime tourism destination in Southeast Asia following democratic reforms.

Thai villagers detained in Myanmar territory

Thai authorities estimate 500-800 Thai villagers are being detained by Myanmar forces in Myanmar territory opposite Ranong's Kra Buri district which is the northernmost district in Ranong province, bordering Myanmar. As from the source, most of the villagers had encroached on the Myanmar side and established rubber plantations, said Sophon Phisetsin, 50, a resident of Moo 9 village.

Prior to their arrest, Kra Buri assistant district chief Jarin Udomchaijaroen said in the report that several state agencies had warned the villagers on several occasions against settling in Ban Inthaninkwan because of the uncertainty over where the actual border is located but the villagers ignored their repeated warnings.
